Baby Shower Etiquette

Baby Shower Etiquette

Some of the best baby showers are very informal events meant to be relaxed and fun. Having said that, following a sensible baby shower etiquette is what will help you create a fun event that will linger on in people’s memories for a long time. Don’t be put off by the word ‘etiquette’, though. Some of the best baby showers are very informal events meant to be relaxed and fun. Having said that, following a sensible baby shower etiquette is what will help you create a fun event that will linger on in people’s memories for a long time. Don’t be put off by the word ‘etiquette’, though. Baby shower etiquette is simply about identifying what actions are appropriate at each stage — it’s about what is to happen when. There are no cast-in-stone rules about this. After all, showers are meant to pamper the expectant mother with lots of love, attention and gifts while ensuring that the guests have a great time. Meaning, feel free to adapt the following suggestions to suit the convenience of everyone concerned.

Let’s take a look at a general order of doing things — a generalized baby shower etiquette — when hosting one of these events. This is commonly followed by folks hosting showers. First of all, remember that the event is about the mother-to-be. So please make sure that you consult her and take her wishes into account when planning a baby shower. Request a core group of close friends to arrive early for the party. This is essential to create a lively atmosphere — one filled with action, conversation and noise when the first guests start trickling in. Also, many of the guests may not know each other (unless it is a small, intimate shower.) Having at least a few people who know them will help them feel at home. This simple move makes for terrific baby shower etiquette. The hostess (or one of the core group of friends) should greet guests as they walk in. You can serve appetizers.

If many people do not know each other, introduce them to others. An alternative is to have everyone introduce themselves — but this is quite awkward for many people, so it is best avoided. This is the right time to play games. You have to decide on the baby shower games well in advance and be ready with whatever materials and preparation you need to do. Many showers have two to four games, although we have seen terrific showers that had just one single game. Either way, games are a great ice breaker and will allow the guests to loosen up and enjoy themselves. As soon as the games get over, it’s time for food. Having great food gives the guests a way to enjoy the high spirits after the games and to relax. The guests would have given the expectant mother plenty of gifts. At this stage, she can start opening the gifts. Watch her delight as she sees the lovely presents for the baby!

By now, the guests are in conversation mode. This is a great time for them to mingle with everyone and the mom-to-be. After a while, some of the guests will start leaving — some in groups, others individually. They should have the opportunity to say goodbye to the expectant mother. The hosts should thank guests individually for their presence and contribution. Last but not the least — thank you cards should be sent out to each guest one or maximum two days after the baby shower. Handwritten notes are best — do mention your appreciation for their time and their gifts. That is broad outline of baby shower etiquette — a generally accepted sequence of events. Be sure to adapt and embellish the steps to suit your situation.
